~~ Images of West Asheville and Haywood Road ~~
A
woodcut from an 1890 guide to Western North Carolina, showing Mt.
Pisgah in the background with what is described as West Asheville in
the foreground. I can't identify any of the buildings
or roads.
Looking east on Haywood Road from the Brevard Road
intersection. Behind the streetcar in distance is West Asheville
Presbyterian Church at 690 Haywood Road, between Virginia and Fairfax
Avenues. Probably about 1930 judging from the cars.
Haywood Road, 1937. The cars are supposed to be in a funeral
procession. There is still a gas station today on the site of the
Esso station at upper left. The top of the Bledsoe Bldg is just
visible at upper right. This photo is probably taken from the
portico of what was then the Isis theatre, now Pastabilities. The
tiles showing at lower right are on a building that's now a tatoo
parlor.
428 Haywood Road, ca. 1941. Percy Yarborough and my dad, Lan Sluder, owned this Willys Americar dealership. An Americar can be seen through the showroom window -- the car on the street in front is a 1939 Ford. The "Schlitz" building is gone, but 428 still stands and is now home to a letterpress studio, a book binder, and other shops.
