The Golden Cup award recognizes excellence in brewed coffee. It is awarded annually to retailers and restaurants whose specialty coffee is properly ground and brewed.  Mountain City can evaluate your shop to see if you measure up.

History of the Award From its inception in January 1959 until its termination in December 1975, as a means of emphasizing the importance of proper coffee brewing practices, the Golden Cup Award was presented to over six thousand food service operations in the United States, Canada, and other parts of the world. Unlike other food service awards, the handsome wall trophy was presented only to those operators who met the strict standards of the Coffee Brewing Center of the Pan-American Coffee Bureau, attesting to the excellence of their brewed coffee. Award qualification was determined through samples submitted for laboratory analysis. Independent field representatives made periodic spot checks to assure the standards were being maintained. The Award was effective for one year. Those operators receiving five consecutive Awards received a special ebony trophy. For the tenth consecutive Award, a special engraved framed trophy was presented. This program assisted the Coffee Brewing Center in its primary role - promoting a better cup of coffee. Recipients were able to realize the value of the Award through increased sales.

Golden Cup Award Standards The Coffee Brewing Center during its operation conducted numerous scientific studies on all aspects of coffee brewing. Their most significant finding was the recognition that the vast majority of coffee drinkers preferred a coffee beverage prepared from a formula that fell between 3.25 - 4.25 ounces of coffee for each 64 fluid ounces of water, resulting in a beverage strength between 1.15% - 1.35% of dissolved coffee flavoring material. In addition to using the proper brewing formula, the coffee Brewing Center also identified five other key factors for properly brewed coffee: 1. Proper Grind 2. Correct Temperature 3. Correct Time 4. Good Water 5. Clean Equipment In reactivating the Golden Cup Award program, the Specialty Coffee Association of America has adopted these same standards.

Golden Cup Award Eligibility Every food service operation selling brewed coffee for public consumption is eligible to apply for the Golden Cup Award. It is not necessary to be a member of the Specialty Coffee Association of America. Other than meeting the brewing standards established by the Specialty Coffee Association of America, there are no other restrictions of any kind on eligibility for participating in this program.

On-Site Evaluation Every food service operation applying for the Golden Cup Award will receive an on-site evaluation by an SCAA Certified Brewing Technician.  Mountain City Coffee Roasters has this Certification and can perform the on-site evaluation for you.

Laboratory Analysis of Samples All samples submitted for evaluation by SCAA will be tested by the Specialty Coffee Institute using a LabWave 9000 microwave moisture and solids analyzer, with a 0.01% resolution of dissolved solids.

Consumer Recognition of Excellence Each food service operator earning the Golden Cup Award will receive a Certificate of Coffee Brewing Excellence from SCAA. In addition to the name of the establishment, the certificate will also include the name of the unit's primary "Brewmaster," the individual responsible for maintaining the coffee program standards in the operation. In addition, the operator will be able to purchase a handsome, three dimensional, wall plaque to display for consumer recognition of the coffee brewing excellence maintained by the operator. The 16" x 12" walnut plaque will be engraved with the recipient's name denoting the Specialty Coffee Association of America's acknowledgement of the operator's proven ability to maintain high quality standards.
